In the African villages a lot of food insecurity is seasonal. Although there is also a total shortage of food resources, there are certain times of the year when particular foods are hard to come by, for a variety of reasons. I will approach this from the point of view of villages that have the most typical rainfall pattern for much of this region of Africa, a dry winter with rainfall in the summer, but my comments should be adjusted to fit other regions. The person who started me thinking about this issue is Nomokhaya Monde, from University of Fort Hare. She pointed out that vitamin A shortage is especially a problem in Winter, because vegetables that depend on rainfall are hard to grow. Following this discussion, I read her original PhD dissertation, which is a close study of food and nutrition issues in two rural villages of the Eastern Cape. I will divide these issues up according to the types of food in question.
